What’s in a Name?

The MVBWN (Mohawk Valley Business Women’s Network) has been around for 30 years…

It’s never been an easy name for the group… “V/B” and “M/N” can be difficult to discern if you’re saying the initials of the group, the “B” and “W” are frequently swapped around or the entire name is kinda slurred over by those who haven’t gotten the hang of it yet…  which includes quite a few members too (It’s embarrassing if you can’t even say the name of the group you’re in!)

The group was founded as a source of support for women entrepreneurs. Yet “entrepreneurs” is not in the title, and the group doesn’t have an “official” tagline that clearly expresses its’ mission.

The members are the reason the group has survived 30 years; but I can’t help but think that the group would thrive if they branded themselves better – if they created a strong identity with a more recognizable name, a strong tagline, and a meaningful logo.

As incoming president this year, I’m hoping to help with that – if you have suggestions or thoughts I’d love to hear from you!

Networking Rule #1: Don’t be a Bullwinkle!

Recent events reminded me of a networking group I attended ONE meeting of last year; a meeting that strongly enforced what I believe is Rule #1 of Networking.

I was called by someone I’ve done business with and asked to join a local group that would be like a BNI but without the price tag. Since I respected the person that asked I attended the meeting.

About 10 of us gathered around the conference room table and each chatted about their business and handed out their cards. Most of them were new faces to me. I had never met “Bullwinkle” but I had just stopped using his company’s services (which, of course, I didn’t mention) .

Bullwinkle, not really knowing any of us, hands us all his card and a brochure for his products (all of which are a few hundred to a few thousand dollars) without asking if we had the slightest interest in them (obviously the company he works for is paying for the brochure so he doesn’t care how many go into a landfill).

I handed out a copy of the MVBWN (Mohawk Valley Business Women’s Network) Directory. I did this for two reasons: 1) I want people to know there are women entrepreneurs out there and utilize their services and 2) at that time I designed the piece so was marketing for my skills too.

Well, within three days I had Network members emailing me asking if I was getting emails from some guy named Bullwinkle – sure enough, he had taken the directory and spammed every member!

Obviously he didn’t understand that:

  1. We’re women entrepreneurs and if he had passed that on to a woman to spam us he may have gotten a better response
  2. He should have considered establishing a relationship by using the services of a member
  3. Several of these women clearly had no need for his product
  4. That kind of spamming makes you seem desperate
  5. We’re businesswomen – we’re not going to buy a big ticket item from a stranger through an email

I felt violated (for lack of a better word). I never implied anyone should spam these women – I assumed business people would know better. As I said at the beginning, I only went to ONE meeting – I have a lot of connections and if someone abuses them there is no second chance; I take the privilege of relationship very seriously. I’m sure Bullwinkle didn’t get a single bite from his spam – and he lost any chance of ever doing so.

Remember: It’s about relationship, and “bullying” your way into an inbox does not build a relationship, it builds a wall. Protect your contacts and respect the contacts of others – that’s the #1 rule of networking!

Give the Gift that Keeps on Giving… what does that mean for you?

Today I spent an hour or so creating a gift that may last a lifetime… or maybe will only last until we buy a house… or maybe only until I tire of a sage green and chocolate brown bedroom! But this gift will be a gift to my husband every night we go to sleep and every morning we awaken in our bed…

I tell him I love him a lot – and he enjoys hearing it; but, I want to remind him, with silent words, just how much he means to me every day.

So, did you get your love a gift that “keeps on giving”? Or - perhaps more importantly to the purpose of this blog – did you get YOURSELF a gift like that? If not, I’d like to offer some suggestions…things to do for yourself this year to develop / strengthen your personal and professional goals.

  1. If you have not joined a networking group yet… first, ask yourself what’s holding you back and OVERCOME IT!  You know I use “The Success Principles” to get me past supposed “stop signs”. You may just need to do some soul searching…or you may need a book or a mentor to help you – but networking will help you develop in so many ways – AND you’ll be a benefit to others! Someone is looking for an answer to a question… someone is looking for an expert like you!
This can also lead to helping community-wide, and being known community-wide… you never know who knows who you know! A former employer of mine told me once to not be afraid to tell people what I’m good at – because “someone needs what you have and you wouldn’t want them to miss out because you can’t  “toot your own horn”!
I’m a member of a small mastermind group, a local woman’s organization and a regional group of women entrepreneurs, as well as participating in the Mohawk Valley Chamber of Commerce Membership/Ambassador committee – pick a couple groups: one with very common interests (entrepreneurs) and one with a broad range of members (Chamber of Commerce) – I have helped facilitate interactions between the two groups that hadn’t happened previously – and you can too!
  2. Make a plan to be healthier!  Yeh – this is tough… putting this in writing as a way to motivate myself too! It’s only as easy as we think it is (if we say it’s hard – it will be!) so let’s make a pact to say, “I can do this!” and then DO IT! I’m going to join the local YWCA – I believe that’s where I want to put my money and time – I need a variety and inspiration, so hoping that’s the spot.
Go on a tour of a few fitness centers – most will give you a guided tour and a day or a week free! Wow – my local Y is on Twitter!
  3. Make a plan to be wealthier!  Many women have issues with making money – GET OVER IT!
Do you spend hours and hours planning the family vacation or researching where to save money on a high ticket item? We spend loads of time on how to spend money…. but have you ever spent that much time actually laying out a plan on how to make more money? I just thought of that… and it has created several emotions… fear (can I do that?) anger (that’s stupid, why haven’t I been doing that?), frustration (how long is that gonna take? I’m already busy enough!) [see this link for free planning tools from Jack]

Wow – you know I’m on this journey with you when the self-discovery mode kicks in! I believe I have great success in #1, but it appears I have two other areas that I’m lacking in… but I’m not supposed to focus on lack (or I’ll get more of it). I suggest that both of us celebrate the areas we’re successful in and make positive plans/goals for the other areas!

Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah (Chanukah), and a Peaceful, Prosperous New Year to you all! I’m grateful to you for joining me on this journey and looking forward to another year of sharing in your entrepreneurial journey!

Updates, Status Reports, Touching Base…Don’t lose touch with your customers!

Been awhile since I sat down to blog! Figured I better do some updating – “practice what I preach!”

Rojeti… The Donny Deutsch show, The Big Idea, was postponed a couple nights so Joyce still hasn’t seen her segment last I knew… very disappointed over this and we hope to be able to get a copy of the broadcast from someone so maybe I can show it here!
Elwood’s… I believe it is no longer so you may see the site fade to black soon; I think it took a lot out of them to lose so much in the fire; I think they’re moving on…
Teresa Huggins… The book is out! Should have copies at Panache this week! Book signings will be scheduled soon in New Hartford, Clinton and Whitesboro (at least). The companion blog for the book is here.
Julie Falatico… The CD is out and that too shall be at Panache – see her website for gig dates and song samples!
Seth Godin & triiibes…. We “cutting edge” folks that bought a copy sight unseen were privileged enough to receive an advance copy this week in the mail!!! So, we got a freebie that we can read and pass along the other copy to a friend or client! He’s just that good!!!
MVBWN… I have secured full-color printing for the next directory so if you’ve been considering joining the network now is the time!
I have several new sources of info and cool events to list soon; will I see you Wednesday at the SOHO in Syracuse? Or the great event Friday for Women TIES? And don’t forget to mark your calendars for the WISE Conference!

Jack Canfield left us all in awe!

Wow! Jack Canfield held two seminars in Verona on Tuesday and most of the women I spoke with (many of whom are in my “network“) are still on a high! We just can’t wrap ourselves around all the info we learned and all the inspiration we have received for ourselves and seen other experience!

It is just incredible how the electric the room was; so many people got tuned in to exactly what their passion and mission was… I hope you take the opportunity to check out the blog for the event and read some of the stories for yourself!

The afternoon session focused on The Success Principles, a book I personally own and would recommend to anyone for professional and personal development. I own the CDs too - get for driving to or listening to while working – I get something new from them upon each listen (good thing they’re not vinyl or they’d be worn through!). Here are some great videos of Jack describing some of the principles - if you’ve never heard him speak this is a good place to get a feel for his style.
There were about 350 people at the afternoon event – 300 was the goal – and was amazing to see that many professionals in one room who are interested in self development and professional growth.

The evening session focused on The Law of Attractionand Jack’s new book, “Jack Canfield’s KEY to Living the Law of Attraction” - a simple guide to creating the life of your dreams.

“This book is your guide for using the Law of Attraction to create the life you desire. Within these pages, Jack clearly explains not only what you need to know, but what you need to do in order to attract what you want in your life. The Key to Living the Law of Attraction addresses the important issues of clarity, purpose and action. This thought provoking book will take you step-by-step through the processes of defining your dreams, goals, and desires. Along the way, you will also gain a greater understanding of yourself, a sense of who you really are and why you are here.”

I challenge you to pick one area that you’d like to make a change in and find a mentor – whether it be Jack, through one of his books or coaching programs or attending an event - or a person in your life that has the skills you need to develop in yourself, and get started TODAY on making a change that will affect your whole life!

Get another serving of Chicken Soup – served up by a local author/speaker, Teresa Huggins!

Teresa will be speaking at the Metro Utica BPW Recognition Luncheon on October 16th. Everyone loved the talk she gave earlier this year for the MV Women’s Business Network – so we’re excited to hear about what she has in store for us this time!

National Business Women’s Week is nearly here – we have a week of great events lined up; breakfast, lunch and dinner meetings with interesting speakers and tasty food AND networking opportunities everywhere!

Many of the events require registration – and some are free to attend! Men are also welcome to join us – and you don’t have to be a member of any of the participating groups to come.

So, join us… be “well fed “and ”well informed” at events that are “well worth” your time!

And now for something completely different… a tasty treat!

My favorite Pampered Chef, Tracy Black, offered me this recipe for the abundance of tomatoes I purchased yesterday – it’s awesome! Feel free to modify it – try black/green or mixed olives, you could add carmalized union, throw in some spices like cilantro, red pepper flakes, celery seed, or even a little hot sauce to spice it up!

Easy Pampered Salsa
One jar marinated artichokes

Two tomatoes (seeded if very juicy)

One small can sliced olives

1/4 red onion

One clove garlic
Chop all in large bowl, Tracy uses her Pampered Chef Salad Chopper, but you could use good kitchen shears or the tool of your choice.
You can serve it immediately or chill it if you like it cold.

Everyone can use a little inspiration on Mondays…

How many weeks ago did I say that I intended to have Elwoods as a client? Well, it’s in the works - breaking news as it happens!

So, I found this cool page of audio interviews, e-mailed to me from “Women for Hire”, I really like the Diane Sawyer interview – click to take a listen to her story – she sounds like she’s a “Secret” believer too:

DIANE SAWYER

Diane Sawyer on what makes her tick, her theory on hiring and mentoring, a lack of sleep on Sunday nights, the books on her desk, and why she’s particularly fond of staplers.

What a great event at Minnowbrook that Teresa Huggins guided in April – we were so inspired! 4 of the 10 participants were from the MV Business Women’s Network – great to have nearly an equal number of women you did and didn’t know – we learned so much from and about each other… the pictures area awesome too, Barb Goldsmith did a great job capturing the beauty of the place and the “fun-ness” of our group of women – we’re ready to do it again soon!

Jan Fraser & Teresa are two of six authors of a new book, “Dream, Dare & Dance” which is intended to be released by October (or maybe July – they’re on a mission!)

The flu, Nyquil, and back to networking!

I had my butt kicked by the flu, bronchitis, or something like it…. had I known that they changed the formula of Nyquil I would have been healed sooner, but since I don’t make meth I wasn’t paying attention when they announced the removal of pseudoephedrine – which apparently are key to the drug working for me!

Now that I’m back I want to share a couple upcoming events with you. Mark your calendars – these events are fun opportunities for networking.

The Zonta Club of Utica is holding their Annual Champagne Brunch; I’m going to be an “executive waitress”! I think it will be a blast and I’ve been wanting to meet some Zontonians! The event is March 18.

The MV Business Women’s Network – as well as many other great organizations/businesses – will be taking part in the Mohawk Valley Showcase; and the Business After Hours event is a blast! 11am – 7pm April 19.

An event I’ll be attending next Tuesday is with James Ray, one of the teachers in The Secret – if you don’t know the secret where have you been? There are still a few seats left… join us, and let me know – I’ll save you a seat – really!

Hope to see you at one of these events, V-
